Jamie Woodson - An Amateur Perspective

Jamie Woodson is in a short list of amateur handler's here competing at this years 2016 National Retriever Championship. A National mostly dominated by the Professional Field Trial Trainers, quite an achievement as an amateur to qualify! Jamie has been kind enough to share with the world her experiences here at the National. Thank You, Jamie.

   "Sadness or Euphoria"
-An amateur competitor's perspective

By: Jamie Woodson #68

Nov. 16, 5:30 a.m. - Bill and I deliver donuts to the gunners and head to the parking area designated for the handlers. It's still dark and we prepare #90 Baby, as she is fourth dog to run this 5th series, a big water triple.  And then, oh *#%$!  Baby is limping on her back right leg.

Billy Joel has an old song "Sadness or Euphoria" which includes the lines "For we are always what our situations hand us . . . It's either sadness or euphoria."  How true.

Fearing the worst but hoping for the best, we soon realize that she has only picked up a sticker in her paw (photo of actual thorn attached). Our friend (and, in this case, life support giver) Dr. Jennell Appel, DVM, confirms that all is okay and Baby is good to go. Now, all we have to do is run this very challenging set of marks - no big deal, huh?

So, in this instance, it's not sadness but euphoria as we watch Baby have a nice job, despite one good sized hunt, and we leave her future in this National to the decision of the judges - with fingers crossed, of course.

The remainder of my day will be spent watching these great dog/handler teams compete, hoping all stay healthy, and trying to prepare myself for my eventual swing at the plate late this afternoon.

I'm also going to think about Billy Joel's words and try to remember that, in this moment, this situation has handed us euphoria. Not just because a potential injury turned out to be nothing or because Baby made it through a challenging test, but because we are so very fortunate to be living this joyful experience, with each other and with our wonderful companions.

Until later today, may the wind be in your favor and your flyers be friendly.

Jamie Woodson #68

17. FC-AFC See Jane Run For Blue, "Jane", LF, Chris Ledford

came to the line at 11:53 pm

Flyer: Smacked it!

LR: down the hill over the dam, into the cove behind the holding blind and to the bird.

MR: entered the left corner of the pond, over the dam up the hill angling toward the area, skimmed the left side of the holding blind and deep made a move to the right, then went way right up by the hay bales over to a mound then made a few passes before grabbing the bird.

Pat's Perspective

I have been sitting here watching the dog work through midday. I have been trying to figure out why the dog work has been as good as it has been. It seems that the dogs that are to the left climb the hill to the right and find the holding blind and end up getting the bird with varying degrees of hunts. One other observation is the difference in color of the brush around the holding blind. I am not sure if the dogs can see the difference in the color? These dogs today are so well prepared and difficult to trip up. After just writing this, the next had to be picked up. One thing for sure is that there will be lots of changes in the dog work over the course of a 11+ hour test.

This test is a break from tradition,  typically the 5th series is more of a land test. This test uses quite a bit of water. It's a good thing today with 80 degree temperatures. This is hump day and there is lots more to come. Stay tuned.........
